Getting Started

General Fellowships Information

There are literally hundreds of fellowships and grants available to students. You can use them for undergraduate and graduate study in the United States and abroad; for summer thesis research; for travel over the summer or after graduation; for public service and entrepreneurial projects; and for so much more.

You should always start by deciding what project(s) you want to pursue. Keep in mind that fellowships are a means to an end, not an end in and of themselves. Some questions to consider in formulating your project and writing your proposal include:

  • What do I want to do? Why?
  • Where do I want to go? Why?
  • What project will I be working on? Why?
  • Whom will I be working with? Why?
  • •How have I prepared to carry out this proposal?

After you have starting thinking about these questions, head to the List of Fellowships on this site to start looking for funding opportunities. If you have questions or need assistance, feel free to contact the fellowships tutors (email: lohofell@fas).
