Housing Day

Housing Day Explained

Harvard’s annual Housing Day marks the moment that freshmen learn of their placement into one of Harvard’s 12 upperclass residential Houses. They will live there for the remaining 3 years of college.

Customarily, Housing Day takes place on the Friday after spring recess. Early that morning upperclassmen -- teamed together by House, dressed in all their costumes and House regalia --  come to the Yard and bang on the doors of the first-year students to hand them the letter that welcomes them into their assigned House. The whole rest of the day is dedicated to various welcome events and excitement!
