I teach in the English Department and I'm affiliated as well with the programs in History and Literature and the History of American Civilization. My chief interest is nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural history. Since 2001, I have been a staff writer at The New Yorker; for seven years before that, I was the contributing editor of The New York Review of Books. Higher education is one of my research interests, and at Harvard, I have been involved with the curricular review.
