Most of my time I am a primary care doctor, but I am also the medical director of the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, a hospital-run community health center. We serve a diverse population, but many of our patients are Spanish speaking. As part of the Brigham and Women's Hospital, we are affiliated with Harvard Medical School and have HMS students come through, as well as residents from the BWH training program. We have a large focus on health equity and are known in Boston for our work in racial and social justice. We are currently part of an 8-hospital collaborative with the Institute of Health Improvement which is working on how to implement racial and social equity in our medical system. I have also done work with the hospital in LGBTQ care, including helping set up our sexual orientation/gender identity data collection, working on trans care, and have been part of the hospital LGBTQ Employee Resource Group and the Patient and Family Advisory Council. I am an alum of the College and Medical School, did my medical training with the US Navy, and worked with them for 3 years. I was part of the Harvard Gender and Sexuality Caucus for many years, Harvard's LGBTQ organization for Alumni, Faculty and Staff. My background is Puerto Rican and Spanish, and lived in Puerto Rico until I was 5, until we moved to New York. I can share my experience in health care, both as a provider and a manager, having helped the center become a patient centered medical home, transition from one electronic medical record to another, and currently work on many aspects of primary care.
