I received a B.S. from Howard University and a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Rochester. After a teaching career (Simmons College, Robert College, the American College for Girls in Istanbul, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design), I held deanships at MIT and Wellesley College before becoming director of the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe College (1989 - 1997). Among my publications are two novels, Sarah’s Psalm, (Scribner) and The Spirit of Josephine (Côte-d’Or); the nonfiction work, Is That Your Child? Mothers Talk about Rearing Biracial Children (Lexington Books); and a chapbook, Reclaiming Rose: A Suite of Poems.
