My work focuses on opera, music philosophy, and sound studies. While my writings have been translated into several languages, I’m also myself a translator, which I consider a relaxing hobby. My current academic research centers on mischievous sound technologies and acoustic artifacts from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and their place in histories of hearing and mishearing. I was an undergraduate at Yale, received a PhD from Princeton, and I’ve taught at Princeton, the Freie Universität in Berlin, and the University of Pennsylvania. At Harvard, my courses range from film music and film sound technology, to nineteenth-century music and Romanticism, and opera history. I worked as a dramaturge and director before devoting myself full time to academic pursuits and remain fascinated by opera staging and design. I am also an avid fan of antique sound technology and can sometimes be found tinkering with radios from the 1930s and 40s.
