I am an experimental psychologist who conducts research in visual cognition, psycholinguistics, and social relations. I grew up in Montreal and earned my BA from McGill and my PhD from Harvard. Currently Johnstone Professor of Psychology at Harvard, I have also taught at Stanford and MIT and written ten books, including The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works, The Blank Slate, The Better Angels of Our Nature, The Sense of Style, and most recently, Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress. In my spare time, I am Chair of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary, and write frequently for The New York Times, The Guardian, and other publications.
