I am the Arthur Kingsley Porter University Professor at Harvard University. Between 2007 and 2018 I served as Harvard’s president and from 2001 to 2007 as the founding Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. I am the author of six books, including most recently This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, which won the Bancroft Prize and was named as one of the 10 best books of 2008 by the New York Times. I hold a bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and a doctorate in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania.
