Support Services

Audiovisual Equipment

Some audiovisual equipment, such as a projector and a screen, is available from the Masters. The House Committee has provided a VCR for use with the TV in the Junior Common Room.

Guest Suite

Lowell House has one guest suite with a single bed that may be booked, when available, by Lowell students for family members or members of the Senior Common Room for short-term stays (several days at most). The fee is $100; please make your reservations through the House Staff Assistant in the House Office at 495-2283. Sorry, reservations can be confirmed no earlier than one week in advance. The suite is reserved for special guests, parents, or visiting faculty and may not always be available due to prior bookings. When it is available, however, it provides convenient and reasonable accommodations. Guests should report to the Building Manager’s Office upon arrival. Please note: special arrangements must be made through the House Office prior to the guests’ arrival if they are planning to come in on Saturday, Sunday, or between midnight and 8:00 a.m. You may also have guests stay overnight in your suite a few times per semester; check the Rules and Information for residents.

Keys

For more information, see the Key Policy in the Rules and Information.

Laundry

The laundry rooms are located in the basements of G-entry, D-entry, and N-entry, and the washing machines and dryers are maintained by the House Committee. Crimson Cash or coins can be used for the washers and dryers, as well as in the soda machines in the laundry rooms in G- and N-entries.

Mailroom

Our mailroom is located in the basement of F entry. Mail should be addressed to the individual boxes; each resident is assigned a box. To find out which box is yours, and the code for opening that box, go to the Building Manager’s Office. The address of the House is 10 Holyoke Place, Cambridge, MA and the zip code is 02138-7527.

Notices & Bulletin Boards

Announcements of events, activities, and opportunities are available through many sources: online, on bulletin boards, in the Newsletter, and on lowell-open.

House Office notices are always posted in the Newsletter and, when necessary, at the archway and by the door to the Dining Hall.

Fellowships information can be found in the glassed-in bulletin boards in the Dining Hall foyer, and on this website.

The House Committee has a bulletin board in the Dining Hall foyer.

The advising committees (business, graduate advising, law, medicine) will post notices in the dining hall foyer, on the website, and in the Newsletter.

Student notices must be posted on bulletin boards. There are bulletin boards for student use in each entryway, and general usage bulletin boards in the Dining Hall entrance. Please do not post notices on doors, walls, windows, archways, etc., as they will be removed by the Building Manager’s crew.

Newsletter

The Lowell House Newsletter is published weekly. It is e-mailed to all House members, and posted on table tents in the dining hall. The current newsletter is also available on this website, as well as an archive of newsletters for the past several years.

Lowellians are expected to read the newsletter each week. The Senior Tutor and the Masters use the newsletter as a communication to you about things that will directly affect your day-to-day life at the College. Keeping up with the newsletter will help you to avoid missing deadlines, both academic and administrative, House events and messages, and bulletins concerning house safety and the like. The newsletter also includes notices about on-campus events that are not Lowell House events, but these events must have a Lowell sponsor who will be the contact for information and responsible for supervising the event.

The newsletter is the quickest and most efficient way to get an event publicized. The deadline is Friday at noon; email submissions to lohonews@fas or use the online form. Please see a recent copy of the newsletter for instructions.

Posters & Paintings

You are only allowed to hang posters and paintings using poster gum, molding hooks, etc. - no nails in the walls, please! Free poster gum, molding hooks, etc. arer available from the Building Manager’s Office.

To add a touch of class to your room, you might go along to the Fogg museum in the fall when the Mongan Center rents out prints from the collection to Harvard affiliates. The rental is for a year - prints to be returned by the end of the spring semester - and there is a small fee. Check with the Fogg to find out the date on which the prints are rented.

Recycling

Recycling stations are in the basements of C, L, O, and R entries as well as across from the mail room in F entry. Recycling containers for each suite are provided and students are responsible for emptying and storing the containers (they are considered part of the suite “furniture” for which you are responsible). For further information, there is a flyer describing the recycling facilities in the Building Manager’s Office, or contact the Building Manager at 5-2282.

Soda Machines

There are soda machines in the G-entry and N-entry laundry rooms; you may use either coins or Crimson Cash with these machines.

Storage

Storage facilities are available during summer recess; please see the Building Manager for more information. There are also bicycle storage rooms available year-round.

Trash

Bring your trash to the collection areas located in the archways of C, I, and M-N entries. Trash bags are available in the Building Manager’s Office. Try to recycle as much as possible. Recycling stations are in the basements of C, L, O, and R entries as well as across from the mail room in F entry.

Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum cleaners may be borrowed from the Building Manager’s Office in exchange for your Harvard I.D.
