Activities

Life is always lively at Lowell House, with plenty of activities to choose from. So, get involved, meet other students outside your rooming group and have fun! Listed below are some of the organized House activities; we also have a listing of the facilities for hobbies, entertainment and sports in the House.

The recently revived Lowell Arts Guild or Arts Society is responsible for Annual Spring Arts Show and other art showings by Lowell students throughout the year. Contact: Beth Terry (eterry@fas.harvard.edu), House Administrator and our Art Room Coordinator.

The Drama Society used to produce plays, readings and other dramatic events in the JCR and other spaces in the House. However, it is waiting for someone out there – you perhaps! – to breathe some life into it.

The Film Society has revived in recent years, and shows movies throughout the year. Contact Librarian Luis Campos for more information.

HAND is the only public service organization at Lowell House. Contact: Gene Corbin, Resident Tutor in Apley Court.

The House Committee organizes a variety of activities, parties, study breaks, and special events throughout the year for House residents. It also represents undergraduate students, the members of the JCR, to the House Masters and administration. Visit the House Committee web site for more info.

Intramural sports are perennially popular at Lowell, and now we’re even winning! There are a wide variety of sports, and participants of all skill levels and none are welcome: the most important competition, for the Strauss Cup, is based on the level of participation by each of the Houses. So keep and eye out for notices on the bulletin boards and in the Newsletter, or contact the athletic secretaries of the House Committee: IM Reps: IM Reps: Michael Jagiello ’04, Eric Rouge ’04, James Li ’05.

Under Cambridge city ordinances and Harvard regulations, the Russian bells at the top of the Lowell House bell tower must be tolled between 1:00 and 1:15 p.m. every Sunday (and on other special occasions, such as the annual performance of the 1812 Overture in the courtyard). The people entrusted with this task are the Klappermeisters, but you are welcome to climb to the top of the tower and help them ring the bells any Sunday. To become a Klappermeister, you must be selected by one of the current holders of this prestigious office! Visit the Lowell House Bells page for more information.

The House has a darkroom for those interested in photography and developing their own film. To use the darkroom, located under D-entry, and for information on using the equipment, contact Tom Batchelder or Jeffrey Barnet. Volunteers to help keep the darkroom in shape are always welcome.

Our Webmaster, Resident Tutor Alan Wagner, teaches a Web Design Class, open to all Lowell House affiliates. A useful set of resources is available on the class web page if you want to get a head start!
