Monday, October 5 is the final day on which you may add, drop, or change the grading of a course (usually to pass/fail), an unlike other Harvard deadlines, this one is firm. After October 5 you may only withdraw from a course. Add/Drop forms are available outside of A-22, but please note that you’ll need multiple signatures on your form.  * If you are adding a course, you must have the instructor’s signature * You must always have your concentration or sophomore adviser’s signature * Finally, you’ll need the Resident Dean’s signature on all add/drops (I sign last) I’ll be holding office hours throughout this week (see below) and 2:00-3:30 on October 5. Please note that you’ll want to plan in advance on that day and stop in by 3:00 for a signature. Forms left in the box after 3:00 on October 5 will not get signed in time for the deadline.    - SIMULTANEOUS ENROLLMENT. If you are adding classes this week, please make sure that the meeting time does not conflict with any of your other classes. Simultaneous enrollment conflicts are difficult and time-consuming, and you may be in a difficult situation if you create a schedule conflict this late in the term. For simultaneous enrollment restrictions (and there are many) please see p.57 of the Student Handbook.   - GET TO KNOW THE RESIDENT DEAN. It has been pointed out that the previous “Know the R.D.” quiz, while amusing, was not entirely fair, in that you didn’t yet know the Resident Dean (sort of like starting a class with the midterm). To that end, “Know the Resident Dean” will return (in shortened form) next week, and this week will be your chance to ask questions, research, speculate, and otherwise ferret out all the information you might need. So, if you see me, come up and ask any questions you might have. The topic for the week—Education—higher, lower and otherwise.   - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week on Monday from 2-4 and T-F 11-12. I’m also happy to schedule an appointment (5-2283 or lo-abrd@fas) if these times don’t work for you. Please come by to discuss classes, future plans, or just to say hi and comment on the various shades and textures of pink paint on my office walls.   -----------------------------------------------------------------------------   ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR * Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas)   Dear Beth: I have not heard from the erstwhile roommate, who left suddenly for Stuttgart in September, so I am wondering what my chances are of getting another roommate. When do you let students know who is returning for spring semester? Signed, I Have My Own Remote   Dear I Have: I would count on sharing that remote soon. Unless a herd of students depart on last-minute leaves in December, it looks like we will be pleasantly full at Lowell House this coming Spring. But this question raises a very timely issue: students thinking about departing.   Despite advances in technology, I have not yet developed the ability to sedate and tag Lowell students in order to implant a precognitive locator decoder in their frontal lobe that will download directly into my Excel spreadsheet.   Therefore, I do not KNOW if you are considering leaving for spring semester until you TELL ME. I realize it seems a quaint technique, but please, *talk* to me as soon as possible, even if your plans are not finalized. It's crucial to keeping your academic and housing standing current. So don't be coy! Come on up to A-22. Or call 495-2283. Or send me an email. Or do an interpretive dance in the courtyard. I am versant in many forms of communication! ~Beth   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------   FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS Website: http://lowell.harvard.edu/fellowships * Susanna Mierau (smierau@fas) * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas)   LOWELL HOUSE FELLOWSHIPS WEBSITE The Fellowships section of the Lowell House website features an annotated list of common fellowships designed to make it easy to find fellowships that will fund whatever it is that you're hoping to do.  Check it out!   LOWELL FELLOWSHIPS MAILING LIST Want to know what fellowships are out there?  Want to know about them before the deadlines appear in the newsletter?  Want more information on the fellowships listed below?  Subscribe to the fellowships mailing list to get notices about once every week or two of upcoming deadlines and things to think about (relevant for sophomores, juniors, and seniors).  To subscribe, go to http://lists.hcs.harvard.edu/mailman/listinfo/lowell-fellowships .
