Many of you came up looking for hints to last week’s quiz. Now it can be revealed: All questions were TRUE. • As a senior I earned an A in Girls Basketball when I coached the Girls’ Varsity at my high school. • Although I ate all 26 ribs, only the first 24 were enjoyable. • I definitely stopped enjoying senior thesis writing after the first one. • It’s hard to say how much the audience enjoyed my performance in Measure for Measure, but it definitely didn’t measure up to my eating (or coaching). If you entered the contest feel free to come by A-22 for a small prize. - ADD/DROP DEADLINE. The deadline to add or drop a class is coming up on Monday, October 5. Please look at your course listing on my.harvard.edu and make sure that you're enrolled correctly. If you need to add or drop a course you can get the form in the hallway outside the House Office. - SIMULTANEOUS ENROLLMENT. If you are adding classes this week, please make sure that the meeting time does not conflict with any of your other classes. Simultaneous enrollment conflicts are difficult and time-consuming, and you may be in a difficult situation if you create a schedule conflict this late in the term. For simultaneous enrollment restrictions (and there are many) please see p. 57 of the Student Handbook. - BUREAU PEER TUTORING. Feeling a little daunted by a class? Consider hiring a peer tutor through the Bureau of Study Counsel. Tutors are paid with a subsidy and the cost is very reasonable. Interested in tutoring other students taking a class that you loved? Sign up as a tutor! For more information, see the Bureau website: http://bsc.harvard.edu/tutor.html - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week on Monday from 2-3 and Tues.-Fri. 11-12. Please come by or contact me at lo-abrd@fas.harvard.edu or 5-2283 for an appointment—I’m glad to see you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR ~Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, Someone told me that the platform in the dining hall is limited to only seniors. Is that true? And who are all the people who eat there sometimes? They look like alumni but they come in pretty often. Signed, New Kid in N Dear New Kid, No doubt seniors would approve of such regulations but I believe your source has been fed an embellished truth. The High Table dinner has traditionally been held once a week, or a few times a month, and yes, that dinner has been limited to seniors and faculty of Lowell House. However, during normal dining hall hours on nights when High Table is not being hosted by the masters, you (or any Lowellian) may dine on the 'platform.' Now let us address your vocabulary. 'Platform' sounds like we exist in some construction site, or outdoor theatre building. Let's call it a 'dais' so that we can promote the proper ceremonial overtones, shall we? Ceremony and ritual are vital aspects of Lowell House traditions. And part of that tradition is a strong and present Senior Common Room of faculty, administrators and professionals who affiliate with this House primarily to serve as a resource to you. Their contact information and fields are listed on our online SCR directory http://lowell.harvard.edu/scr/index.php. And rituals have a way of sneaking up on you and becoming part of your identity. You may dismiss the Bells now, look askance at High Table, or resent the presence of the Opera in your dining hall this winter, but by the end of your time here you'll be fondly patting the ceremonial bell, dressing up for High Table and meeting the most amazing people, and reminiscing about the opera party bash. Such is the insidious nature of tradition, especially coupled with good food and Lowell House punch. So let's get started! ~Beth ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS Website: http://lowell.harvard.edu/fellowships * Susanna Mierau (smierau@fas.harvard.edu) * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) LOWELL HOUSE FELLOWSHIPS WEBSITE The Fellowships section of the Lowell House website features an annotated list of common fellowships designed to make it easy to find fellowships that will fund whatever it is that you're hoping to do.
