Please come to me with questions and concerns of any kind--in addition to my advising and administrative roles, I also help Lowell House students manage personal struggles, illness and anything else you may encounter on your way to your degree. - FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE. The official final exam schedule has been posted online at www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu. Please check the schedule and contact me if you have any questions. - EXAM MISHAPS. If you miss an exam for any reason, please get in touch me by email or in the office *right away*. If you are too ill to take your exam, you need to go to UHS beforehand to get a medical makeup exam form signed by a doctor. This will allow us to postpone your exam until next semester--not a perfect solution but better than failing the class. If you oversleep, misread the schedule or miss an exam for another reason, come to the office right away and we can talk about your options. - WRITTEN COURSEWORK. All coursework for Spring term courses must be turned in by May 22, the end of exams. If you need an extension past this date for medical or other reasons, I'll need to help you obtain approval from the course and the Administrative Board, so let me know right away. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week from 11:00am-noon Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri. For other times, please contact Kit in the House Office (A-22, 5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR * Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth: What REALLY happens around here on graduation morning? How early does everything begin? Signed, Giddy to Get Going! Dear Giddy, It all starts at 6:15am with a truly Highland feel as you awaken from your slumber to the dulcet tones of our very own bagpiper, strolling through the mists of dawn. Once awakened, you will giggle merrily as you slip on your Coop provided rayon/cotton blend robe and flattering mortarboard ensemble. You'll arrive to a full breakfast in the glittering dining hall by 6:30am. You'll have ample time to savor the bounties of HUDS as you toast one another with vats of champagne while carelessly munching on an endless supply of crispy bacon and steamy scrambled eggs. Finishing off with a flourish of fresh strawberries, you'll then perambulate towards the courtyard at 7:25 or so to arrange yourselves in the formal procession for Senior Chapel, led by our Masters, Resident Dean and august members of the Senior Common Room. Crossing every lane of traffic in Harvard Square with nary a look, your phalanx of black and crimson robes will overtake everything in its path as it swarms inexorably towards Boylston Gate. Once admitted, you will follow the Lowell standard into chapel, and again, to your final seating for the Yard Exercises. After the pomp and circumstance of the morning, you will return to Lowell House to reconnect with your loved ones for a buffet luncheon in the dining hall at noon, followed promptly by a diploma ceremony in the Courtyard where, predictably, you will be asked to stand in alphabetical order. The masters of the House will preside over the awarding of your actual diplomas and you will run, one by one, the gauntlet of SCR members for handshakes and hurrahs. Fully processed, you will now fly freely into uncharted territories as a Harvard College Graduate and also, of course...as an ALUMNUS. So be sure to have your checkbooks handy. ~Beth ___________________________________________________________ This is the last newsletter of the year. If you have specific questions, please email us at any time. ATTENTION JUNIORS Some fellowships--particularly the Fulbright grants for teaching, research, or graduate study and the Marshall and Rhodes Scholarships--have deadlines very early in the Fall semester. In order to submit an application, including letters of recommendation, by the first week of class, it's necessary to think about your proposal and prepare your application over the summer. We recommend starting to think now about these possibilities, attending one of the info meetings listed above, coming to Fellowships Office Hours before you depart for the summer. Susanna, Courtney, and Josh will also be available by email over the summer.
