Please come to me with questions and concerns of any kind--in addition to my advising and administrative roles, I also help Lowell House students manage personal struggles, illness and anything else you may encounter on your way to your degree. - WITHDRAW DEADLINE. The deadline to Add and Drop courses has passed, but you do still have the option to withdraw from a course until Monday, March 16. This will leave the course on your transcript with a WD notation--if you have questions about this option please let me know. - SECONDARY FIELD DEADLINE. Attention Seniors! For those of you hoping to complete a secondary field, deadlines are approaching. In addition to filing your information electronically at www.fas.harvard.edu/secfield, you must print the resulting form, have it signed by your secondary field adviser, and hand it in to 20 Garden St by 5:00 pm on the seventh Monday (March 16). The form must get to the Registrar’s Office that day, not to the House Office. There are no exceptions to this deadline. - BUREAU OF STUDY COUNSEL. The BSC offers a variety of services geared toward a healthy academic and personal life, including counseling services, a reading strategies course, peer tutors, workshops on rooming and blocking, writing, creativity, time management... The services that they provide are diverse and impressive, and a list can be found at their website: http://bsc.harvard.edu. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week from 11:00-noon Tues, Wed, Thurs and Fri. For other times, please contact Kit in the House Office (A-22, 5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR * Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu Dear Beth- What is all this opera business? I thought we were a college?! Signed, Grumpy in G Dear Grumpy, Hey, look at the books. Smell the beer. You are definitely in college. However, one of the beauties of the long-established House-system is that each House is like an independent mini-college within the larger academic institution. This structural autonomy allowed the Houses to evolve differently, embody different characteristics and, in many cases, value different social enterprises. Established in 1938 under mastership of Professor Coolidge, the Lowell House Opera is the longest continually performing opera company in New England, featuring a mix of Harvard students and Boston area students and professionals. The operas are performed in their original language, with English supertitles projected in front of the stage. The Dining Hall presents a more intimate performance venue which is particularly suited to lighter voices and audience members get to see opera up close. The truth is, this whole Opera thang is really a *community* effort involving artists within and outside of Harvard University. It is one of the most notable (and noble) arts outreach efforts made by Harvard. It focuses on a vibrant form of musical expression which has few other venues and gives important opportunities to professional singers and performers to be involved. It also gives students access to a first-rate opera production. These points are often missed by Lowell's beleaguered student residents who just want to know what happened to their simple peanut-butter bagel brain break (and no, I don't blame them for wondering). It does require patience and tolerance but let’s applaud the Opera for its ambition and contribution to a particularly special tradition in the arts. So, Grumpy, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! Go grab your blockmates Sneezy, Sleepy and Dopey and buy a ticket for opening night of OTELLO, March 4th. You won't regret it. ~Beth (a.k.a. Snow White) Dear Beth, Why oh why do those portraits in the far end of the Dining Hall no longer cast their gaze on me during all times of the day? Signed, Artfully Anonymous in A Dear Art (...do you mind if I call you Art?), I guess I should have published this question last week when it came in, eh? Oh well. I think the answer is now quite obvious: there's a really freakin' big castle set in the dining hall! ~Beth ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) * Susanna Mierau (susanna_mierau@post.harvard.edu) * website: http://lowell.harvard.edu/fellowships LOWELL FELLOWSHIPS MAILING LIST Want to know what fellowships are out there?
