Please come to me with questions and concerns of any kind--in addition to my advising and administrative roles, I also help Lowell House students manage personal struggles, illness, and anything else you may encounter on your way to your degree. - STUDY CARD DAY. This Wednesday, February 4th, is study card day. You may turn in your study card in the JCR that day, or to 20 Garden Street anytime. You can print multiple cards for different course possibilities, but you can only turn in one, which needs to have all of the necessary signatures on it. If you get signatures on your study card and then change your mind, you have two options: a) print a new card and get the signatures again, or b) turn it in as-is, then file Add-Drop forms to modify your schedule. - ADVISERS. You can now find a list of your advisers across the College on the Advising Network Portal, which you can reach through www.fas.harvard.edu/advising. If you have a question and you are not sure who is best to ask, just let me know. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have walk-in office hours this week from 2:00- 3:00pm on Mon, and 11:00-noon Tues, Wed and Fri. For other times, please contact Kit in the House Office (A-22, 5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR * Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, There is a green stripe of land running across the large Lowell courtyard where the snow melts much faster than on other grassy areas. Similar stripes appear in other spots on campus, such as in Tercentenary Theater and in front of the Geological Museum. It appears that some underground heat source must be melting the snow in straight lines. What is the source of heat under our feet? Signed, Suspicious of Strangely Snowless Stripe Dear Suspicious, Eureka, you have discovered the steam tunnels' tracks! They criss-cross Harvard campus and cause these strange melting patterns. If this piques your interest, you are not alone. There is a fair amount of underground interest in the topic (ha ha). Curiously, though, Harvard University is absent from the blog archives on ‘College Tunnels’ ( http://members.tripod.com/~tunnels/tinfo.html) though I see that Stanford and Princeton are represented. Hmmm. However, before you get too excited, do be warned: hacking* steam tunnels is an actionable offense at this College. Don't get any ambitious or competitive notions about spelunking over to Sever, okay? Stay safe and plan a healthy diversion, like a Lowell tunnel capture-the-flag marathon, or perhaps a Lowell scavenger hunt that winds up in our fabulous climbing wall. ~Beth ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *hack 9.
