In the next week, remember to take a look at your course listing on my.harvard.edu and make sure that you're enrolled correctly. The deadline to add and drop courses is OCTOBER 15TH, the fifth Monday. Add/drop forms are available in the hallway outside the House Office (A entryway). - SIMULTANEOUS ENROLLMENT. Pay close attention to your class schedule--if you have a conflict in course times, please read the policies on simultaneous enrollment on pg. 52 of the Handbook for Students, then come and see me if you still have questions. If you don't contact me to obtain permission from the Administrative Board to stay in overlapping courses, the registrar will eventually withdraw you from both. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have an open office hour all week from 11am to noon. For other times, please contact Kit in the House office (5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR *Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth: I heard Lowell has a kitchen somewhere but I cannot seem to find out much about it. Where is it? Signed, Baker in B Dear Baker, Yes, the rumors are true. Somewhere in the tunnels there exists a kitchen, fairly well-equipped, and ready to fulfill your gourmand ambitions. Lest you become overly excited and run out to purchase flour and 10lbs of chocolate chips, let me elucidate caveats to permission for its use: 1) you must check out a key from the Building Manager or Night Guard, leave collateral ID, and sign the check out list; 2) if the kitchen is left a mess and food out, it will be shut down to all users indefinitely until perps have cleaned it (deeply); 3) key needs to be returned promptly at midnight to the Night Guard, or promptly upon conclusion of use. If you are getting the impression that we are getting tough on kitchen use, you are a perceptive reader; this kitchen has been sore spot for HU Environmental Health & Safety for some time now. It is a hotbed of attraction for critters, a pest party if you will, a veritable luau for cockroaches. It's time to shut down their party permanently. That means no more festering macaroni bits, no more loose sugar strewn on the counters, no more mysterious gorgons growing in the fridge! It will be clean and bright and beautiful---a sparkling jewel to be proud of! Are you with me??! C'mon busdriver, MOVE THAT BUS!* ~Beth *For those of you who don't get this reference, it's ok. It means you aren't watching too much faux-reality television. Consider yourself blessed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS * Josh Goldman (< mailto:jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu>jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) * Courtney Peterson (< mailto:cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu>cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) LOWELL FELLOWSHIPS MAILING LIST Want to know what fellowships are out there? The Career Forum is a great educational career experience that you will not want to miss. It is an informal opportunity for students to talk with representatives about career opportunities within their organizations and industries. The Career Forum provides; * An informal recruiting event featuring representatives from over 140 prominent organizations representing 20 different industries -NO suits or resumes required! * An excellent opportunity for students/alumni to learn about career/job opportunities and training programs available for liberal arts graduates. * A chance to meet recent grads, begin networking, and speak first hand with company/organization representatives about opportunities in their company/organization and what it's really like to work there! * An opportunity for first years/sophomores/juniors to learn about summer opportunities. * A chance to speak with representatives from OCS who will be available to talk with students about other opportunities and resources to assist in the career quest. The Forum is open to all students and alumni of Harvard College and graduate students of the University at large. As a student, you do not have to sign up or register for the Career Forum; simply come to the Gordon Track & Tennis Center anytime between 10-4 on Friday, September 28th. The morning tends to be slower than the afternoon and, thus, is the most opportune time to have one-on-one conversations with representatives. NOTE: If you do give representatives your resume AND they are participating in the On-Campus Recruiting Program, you must be registered for the program and still apply to the company using eRecruiting if you wish to be eligible to interview with them during their on-campus visit. Speak to a Recruiting Office representative for further information. Shuttle Bus Service The Harvard Shuttle Bus provides service to and from Harvard Business School. Bus schedules can be found on-line on the Harvard website. The Gordon Track and Tennis Center is within walking distance from both the Soldiers Field Park and Stadium shuttle stops. TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THE CAREER FORUM Research. Be Proactive. Ask questions. Take notes. The Career Forum is an excellent Career Exploration opportunity. This is your chance to gather information about employers and organizations. Many will be participating in the On-Campus Recruiting Program, others will not. We have over 140 employers representing a wide variety of industries. The recruiters you meet at the Forum are professional and well versed on their industry. Treat this as you would any research project. You are looking for information regarding the industry, the organization, the department. Be prepared, take notes, and enjoy the forum. Be Prepared * Research the employers before attending. Lists, profiles, and links to all participants in the EMPLOYERS ON CAMPUS section of the OCS jobs page * While resumes are not necessary at the Forum, some non On-Campus Recruiting employers may ask you for a resume, especially if you are an alum or GSAS student. Have a friend proofread your resume for typos, and if time permits, an OCS counselor will review it during our daily walk in hours at 54 Dunster Street. * Talk amongst your peers about strategies for approaching employers. * Prepare what you want to talk to employers about. After researching employers and/or industries, prepare two or three good questions. * Dress ranges from casual to business -- your choice. Employers are expecting the majority of students to attend the Forum between classes, so casual dress is fine. At the Forum * OCS staff will greet you when you arrive at the Forum. You will be given a bag to collect information and materials about the employers/organizations. You will also be given a Career Forum Supplement and up-to-date lists of those employers who have opportunities for GSAS students as well as opportunities abroad. * When you approach employers, tell them your name, school, concentration, class year. * Prepare what you want to talk to employers about. After researching employers and/or industries, prepare two or three good questions. * Show your interest in the employer or the industry especially as it relates to your concentration, research you have done, or programs you have been involved. * Let employers know what your interests are. * Employers realize that for most students this is their first approach to their career search. Don't be shy. Let employers know what skills you have developed while at Harvard, activities and programs you have been involved in while at Harvard, and how those experiences relate to the positions they are looking to fill. * Either in the beginning of the conversation or at the end, ask employers for their business card. If none are available, get their name and email. Most employers will have lists for students to leave their name and email. This is your opportunity to make contact with them. Networking is key to any job search! * Take notes! REMINDER - If you submit your resume to an employer and that employer is participating in the On-Campus Recruiting Program, in order to interview with that employer when they are on campus, you must submit your resume through the eRecruiting process as well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM YOUR PRE-GRADUATE SCHOOL ADVISING TUTORS * Van Tran (vantran@fas.harvard.edu) * Marc Alexander (malexand@fas.harvard.edu) * Amanda Kowalski (kowalski@fas.harvard.edu) If you are interested in applying to a Master or a PhD program, we are here to help you explore what graduate school is about and to assist you with the application process. That is why we are here to listen and support you in your efforts of educating yourself and others about race relations and cultural diversity. Please feel free to and do approach us, as we are always interested in hearing your ideas about what potential events that we together might organize here at Lowell House. FROM THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS TUTORS * Felicity Aulino (aulino@fas.harvard.edu, 3-3001) * Amanda Kowalski (akowalsk@mit.edu, 3-2969) Wellness Tip of the Week: THINK YOU'RE DONE SHOPPING? REMEMBER PHYS. ED.! As you plan out your weekly class, work and extracurricular schedule, remember to set up opportunities for fitting physical activity into your life. Exercise yields many important benefits, including: * improved sleep * stress management * reduced blood pressure * increased level of good cholesterol (HDL) * weight control * improved blood sugar levels * enhanced academic performance * and many, many more positive effects; try it and see! Find ways to move your body and raise your heart rate: walk the long route to class, run by the river, swim, take the stairs, play intramural sports, go dancing, attend a yoga class, read on an elliptical machine, or stretch and do some sit-ups when you wake up! Whether you average an hour or two workout most days, 30 minutes 3 -4 times per week, 10 - 20 minutes every other day, or even 5 minutes here and there, every little bit of exercise will do you a world of good. Failing to plan is planning to fail, so do some groundwork now that will pay off when you find yourself in the thick of things. No matter how much work you have to do, ALWAYS MAKE TIME FOR EXERCISE. Use the suggestions above, be creative: just make up a routine as a little insurance policy for your semester's mental and physical health. Need a jump-start?
