Please do not hesitate drop by my office hours or set up an appointment if you have advising or administrative questions, or if you would like help with chemistry or anything else. A few notes to start the term: - ENTRYWAY MEETINGS. There are mandatory meetings in all entryways at the beginning of this term. Please stay tuned for an announcement from your entryway tutor. - ELECTRONIC REGISTRATION. Registration is now online at your my.harvard.edu page, beginning on Saturday, Sep 8 at 7:00 am and ending at 11:59 pm on Friday, September 14 for upperclass students. Register early, and be aware that you have to be on campus to register. ***If you can't register for any reason, get in touch with me ASAP.*** - ELECTRONIC COURSE ENROLLMENT. The course enrollment tool will open at 7:00 am on Saturday, Sep 8. You'll need to print your study card, obtain all of the required signatures, including that of your in-House sophomore adviser (for sophomores) or your concentration adviser. Turn in the paper study card to the House Office or 20 Garden St by 5:00 pm on Friday, Sep 21 to avoid late study card fees. - CROSS-REGISTRATION. If you wish to cross-register for a course at either MIT or another Harvard faculty, please come by the House office for a cross-registration form. The FAS deadline for cross-registration petitions is October 2, but many of the schools have earlier deadlines of their own. - SIMULTANEOUS ENROLLMENT. Pay close attention to your class schedule -- if you have a conflict in course times, please read the policies on simultaneous enrollment on pg. 52 of the Handbook for Students, then come and see me if you still have questions. - OFFICE HOURS THIS WEEK. I will have an open office hour all week from 11am to noon. For other times, please contact Kit in the House office (5-2283, lowell@fas) to set up an appointment with me. Enjoy shopping period! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASK BETH, the HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR *Beth Terry, A-22, 5-2283 (lo-admin@fas.harvard.edu) Dear Beth, I am a new student at Lowell and I don't like my room. I have never had people walking through my room to go to the bathroom before, and it's so small! I am lost in the tunnels, and my roommate and I don't know anyone. What are we supposed to do? Signed, Miserable in M Dear Miserable, First of all, I totally sympathize with the walk-through issue. It's really hard to adjust to at first, and it takes some fortitude to manage sharing space. I have two kids, for instance, and it took me years to be able to deal with them escaping from their cages. You see, at Lowell House, we want to blend you into the community and make you part of it. To help you with this assimilation we present you with an opportunity to engage in Community Living: this means the walls are thin, square footage is minimal, the bathrooms small, and the critters assertive. It also means that other human beings are present in abundance with their own noises, needs and nosiness. However, the wonderful flip side of Community Living--the Yin to the suffering Yang--is the eventual discovery of your secret Lowellian inside. Only recently conceived, it lurks in the chambers of your little nascent alumni heart, wanting to blossom. It feeds off tea and samosas, milk and cookies (taken weekly in the Library) and--when fully mature--a good draft of Stein Club beer to finish its development. So treasure your spirit as it adjusts to these changes! Your helpmate in this journey is your resident tutor: there to assuage your fears with packs of Ring Dings and to advise you on life. Soon enough you will be scampering through the tunnels of Lowell House like a happy hamster and your spirit awash in the bonhomie of the Best House On Campus. ~Beth ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS TUTORS *Josh Goldman (jdgoldm@fas.harvard.edu) *Courtney Peterson (cmpeters@fas.harvard.edu) LOWELL FELLOWSHIPS MAILING LIST Want to know what fellowships are out there?
