Bells Ring in Russia
Dear Members of The Lowell House SCR, Yesterday, March 17, the bells we used to call the "Lowell House Bells" rang for the first time in more than seventy years in their historic home at the Danilov Monastery in Moscow. Father Roman was there in the Danilov belltower and many of our friends from the monastery can be seen in the photo gallery below. Come to SCR Lunch today at 12:45 and will have a brief toast to the event, the circle now complete. All the best, Diana and Dorothy
Dear Bellringers Past and Present, As some of you know, this past Tuesday, 17 March 2009, was the Feast Day of Saint Danil of Moscow. It was observed at the Danilov Monastery in Moscow with the first official ringing in Moscow of the bells that until this past summer hung at Lowell House. Some of you may wish to read the remarks of the new Patriarch on the occasion, translated below. You will also find an image gallery and video footage of the occasion. Sincerely, Ben Rapoport
This morning our Nieman Fellow, Andrei Zolotov, sent the following video & audio clip of the first-ringing : http://www.patriarchia.ru/db/text/589768.html The photo gallery is here http://www.patriarchia.ru/db/text/589598.html Andrei also translated the speech of Patriarch Kirill given at the occasion:
I greet you all, my dear ones, from the heart of my heart on this extraordinary occasion. The ringing of these wonderful bells is dividing two epochs -an epoch of destruction and an epoch of creation. May God grant us that the toll of these bells would never - till the end of times - cease here, on the bell tower of St. Daniel's Monastery. But it is important that this toll would remind us all about what we - our country, our people and our Church -- had to go through. Let this toll always mobilize our will, our minds and our energy so that never, under no circumstances would our pious people turn away from faith. Let the toll of these bells always awaken our conscience and make us think about many things, and first of all, think about the Eternity. We believe that that's how it will be. It is not by accident that these bells have returned from overseas to our first capital city. I would also very much like today's event to help Russia and the United States of America to perhaps begin a new era in their relations. Two great states and two great countries. It is not without the Divine Providence that the bells found themselves in one of the most important intellectual centers of the United States. Harvard University is one of the most outstanding educational and research centers in the world. And may God grant it that the desire of the Russian Orthodox people to return these holy objects - the bells - would help the scientists and students of Harvard University to also think about God and preserve the Christian faith in their hearts. Because the common system of Christian values is something that can connect countries and peoples beyond any political boundaries. May God grant it that, through the prayers of St. Daniel of Moscow, the toll of these bells would help both Russians and Americans not to forget a path to God. May God keep you all and, through the prayers of Saint Monk and Prince Daniel of Moscow, may the Almighty Lord keep our land and our first capital city and the holy Daniel's Monastery! Amen. Joyous feast to you all! [Translated by Andrei Zolotov, Jr. Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, Founding Editor, www.RussiaProfile.org] -- Diana L. Eck and Dorothy A.
